The Science of Hanok's 3D Passive Cooling
A Hanok (traditional Korean house) is far more than just a visually stunning structure. Long before modern air conditioning or electricity existed, ancient Koreans combined topography, climate, thermodynamics, and aerodynamics to create an ingenious 3D Passive Cooling System—a prime example of eco-friendly K-Green Architecture.
The secret to this refreshing indoor breeze lies in a three-dimensional design:

Step 1 (Foundation): 'Stone Platform' & 'Raised Floor' to Block Ground Heat
Instead of building directly on the ground, a Hanok is raised on a elevated stone platform called a Gidan, with the wooden hall (Daecheong Maru) elevated off the ground.
Primary Shield Against Heat & Humidity: The raised stone foundation acts as a thermal barrier, preventing hot ground heat and muggy summer humidity from rising into the living spaces.
Thermal Mass of Stones: Stone has high thermal capacity, meaning its temperature changes very slowly. The stones, cooled during the night, keep the floor temperature comfortably low throughout the day.
Shaded Sub-Floor Breeze: The empty space beneath the wooden floor remains shaded and cool. As wind passes under the floor, it cools the wooden planks from below and carries away moisture from the earth.

Step 2 (Surroundings): The Pressure Engine—'Front Courtyard' & 'Rear Garden'
By designing completely different environments for the front and back of the house, a Hanok creates an artificial pressure difference (High vs. Low Pressure) around itself.
The Heated Front Courtyard (Low Pressure System): The front yard is intentionally kept empty, covered only with light-colored mineral sand (Masato) without any trees. Under the hot summer sun, the sand heats up rapidly, causing warm air to rise. This creates a Low Pressure zone due to the rising air currents.
The Cool Rear Garden (High Pressure System): In contrast, the back garden behind the house is lush with trees and covered in deep shadows from the eaves. The cool, dense air settles low, creating a High Pressure zone.

Step 3 (Center): The 'Daecheong Maru' Air Corridor
According to the laws of physics, air naturally flows from an area of High Pressure (dense, cool air) to an area of Low Pressure (rising, warm air).
Creating a Natural Wind Tunnel: As the cool air from the rear garden rushes toward the warm front yard, opening the doors of the central wooden hall (Daecheong Maru) allows this breeze to stream straight through the center of the house.
Complete 3D Passive Cooling: When you lie down on the Daecheong Maru, you experience cool breeze flowing from the sides and above, while resting on a wood floor chilled from below by the stone foundation and sub-floor draft. It provides maximum cooling comfort without needing a single watt of electricity.
